Bike Happy Cycle Training (‘bikehappy”) is an organisation which offers a range of cycle training and cycling activities for children. We want all children to feel safe and secure, and by following the procedures within the policy we will uphold our legal duty to safeguard. This policy sets out our commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children during our activities.
bikehappy fully recognises our responsibility to protect children from harm. We strive to promote the positive wellbeing of all children who take part in our activities by providing a safe and supportive environment, where children can develop their cycling skills safely. Our policy applies to all children, staff, volunteers and parents. All staff and volunteers will be trained to respond to a disclosure from a child and will know the procedure to follow.

Safer working practices for staff and volunteers
To ensure that we follow Safer Recruitment processes, we will ensure the following steps are in place when recruiting staff/volunteers: 1). There is a clear job description including person specifications. 2). All applications will be via an application form. 3). Interviews will be undertaken, references will be requested and checked, and qualifications will also be checked.
What is our procedure for DBS checks?
As we are working with children we will also ensure that an Enhanced DBS disclosure has been undertaken by all staff members. There is no expiry date for a DBS certificate, however we will request a new DBS check every 3 years as part of our ongoing safer working practices.
If a person is registered on the DBS Update service then we will ask for their permission to undertake an online check of their enhanced DBS certificate.
If a person does not have an enhanced DBS check within the last 3 years then we will process one through a registered body.
What is the safeguarding induction process for staff/volunteers?
When we recruit new members of staff we will ensure that they have read our safeguarding policy as well as our code of conduct and understood everything outlined in it. We will give them access to a copy in case they need to revisit it.
What training will staff/volunteers have? (Safeguarding/First Aid)
We will ensure that all staff have undertaken safeguarding and first aid training within the last three years. We will hold a copy of their certificate to ensure we are aware of when they need renewing.
Our procedure for handling a disclosure from a child
If a child discloses to a member of staff/volunteer:
We will listen and be supportive.
We will not ask any leading questions, interrogate the child, or put ideas in the child’s head, or jump to conclusions.
We will not stop or interrupt a child who is recalling significant events.
We will never promise the child confidentiality, it must be explained that information will need to be passed on to help keep them safe.
How will we record a disclosure?
We will record what was said immediately and as close to what was said as possible. We will also record what was happening immediately before the child disclosed.
We will contact the DSP immediately.
As soon as possible, we will transfer this information onto a safeguarding concern form. We will name, sign, date the record and arrange to give the completed form to the DSP within 24 hours.
Who will we contact about a disclosure?
If we are concerned that a child or children is experiencing or likely to suffer harm, we will telephone the NSPCC safeguarding team immediately to seek advice on next steps.
We will gain consent from the parent to contact the NSPCC, unless to do so would place the child at further risk of harm or undermine a criminal investigation.
We will not investigate and will be led by the Local Authority and/or the Police.
We will keep written dated records of all conversations with the NSPCC and other Authorities.
